On April 26, 2016, in Television & Video Production, by Television Faculty For the sixth consecutive year, students and faculty from the Television & Video Production Program have made their way to the largest broadcast and media trade show in North America – The National Association of Broadcasters Convention (aka NABShow). Students manage all of the fundraising and travel logistics to enable them to attend the event – a real challenge this time around due to the Canadian Dollar exchange rate! Though the primary focus of the show is technology, with manufacturers from all over the world presenting their latest and greatest broadcast and new-media hardware and software, it’s also a great networking opportunity for students! With over 103,000 attendees from 187 countries at the show, broadcasters from across Canada and around the world are interacting and socializing with BCIT students every day! While the NAB Show is taking place, BCIT faculty took time to attend the Broadcast Education Association event, meeting with fellow broadcast educators (including Broadcast Educators Association of Canada members) from around the world! As always, BCIT’s Television students have made a highly-visible, overwhelmingly positive impression on show attendees and exhibitors this year, and this participation has been warmly welcomed by Canadian broadcasters and media representatives. Students taking part in these events are a strong reminder of BCIT’s ongoing commitment to providing opportunities for BC students to obtain a world-class broadcast education! In the last three weeks we’ve been producing student commercials at: TAZ Comics Gracie Barra Ju Jitsu Big Pete’s Collectibles Steel Toad Brewing Bikes on the Drive Soft Peaks Ice Cream And we’d like to thank all of these local businesses for allowing our students to practice their production skills! There have been lots of great learning experiences, including how to deal with Lower Mainland weather when shooting exteriors (bring rain gear, stay warm, craft services coffee), how to deal with unplanned power outages in your studio (commandeer an instructor’s office with windows), and how to shoot in a collectibles shop, when your crew and instructors are geeking-out over all of the goodies (limit the amount of spending money you bring!). Only a few weeks of the term left before we switch into “Practicum Mode”, where our Television & Video Production students work with the Broadcast & Online Journalism students to create our weekly BCIT Magazine newscast! And as always, the full sets of images from our location productions can be found on our Flickr album! Production Science World – Live Production On March 1, 2016, in Television & Video Production, by Television Faculty Each year, one of our favourite projects is our first-year Television & Video Production trip to Science World to produce a live cut of their centre-stage science shows. The Television Students students bring our Broadcast Pix Mica HD Flypack down to Science World, and learn how to create an entire live television production facility – from scratch. The process isn’t simply turning on cameras – students need to understand signal flow, camera feeds, the intercom and audio system, as well as how to safely manage a considerable amount of production equipment in a very public setting. The Science World staff love having BCIT Television there, as our sizable equipment setup generally becomes another exhibit for the families in attendance to observe, and we send the finished productions back to Science World to aid in the training of their staff.
